Captain Bishop began his tour of duty with the Fernandina Beach Police Department on March 3, 1987 as Animal Control Officer. In 1989 Captain Bishop attended the St. Augustine Police Academy while maintaining his Animal Control job responsibilities, and obtained his Law Enforcement Officer certification on December 4, 1989. On January 10, 1990, Captain Bishop filled a Police Officer position and worked in the Patrol Division until November 8, 1996 when he transferred into the Investigative Division as a Detective. Captain Bishop was promoted to Sergeant on October 2, 2005 and became the supervisor of the Special Enforcement Unit until July 17, 2006 when he was transferred to supervise the Investigative Division. On December 4, 2006 he was promoted to Captain of the Investigative Bureau. Captain Bishop currently supervises the Criminal Investigative Bureau and the Special Enforcement Unit.
Captain Bishop was born in Jacksonville, Florida and moved to Yulee, Florida in 1975. After graduating from high school in 1985, Captain Bishop began working for the City of Fernandina Beach Airport as an Airport Lineman.
Captain Bishop has served in numerous areas of the Police Department, some of which are Patrol, Dispatch, and Property & Evidence. Captain Bishop has his Pilot’s License and has utilized his flying expertise for law enforcement purposes, such as aerial photographs of crime scenes, etc. Captain Bishop also has his scuba diving certification and has participated in dives searching for drowned victims, etc. He is of one two Certified Voice Stress Examiners with the Police Department. Captain Bishop has obtained his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice.
Captain Bishop was the Fernandina Beach Police Department’s 1993 and 2003 Officer of the Year.
