Parks Master Plan
workshop photo
April 17, 2015: The Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Master Plan draft will be sent to the state Department of Economic Opportunity for review since they funded the parks plan project through a grant. After state comment, the plan will be shared with the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee and then the City Commission for approval. A simultaneous effort will involve amending the City Comprehensive Plan's Recreation and Open Space element to update language based on the plan.

The plan is a proposal only at this point - it will be up to the City Commission to adopt the plan.

Parks Workshops:
  • On April 13th, David Barth, the City's park consultant, presented a final presentation to the City Commission on the parks project. Click here to view the presentation. The findings are also presented in this poster.
  • On March 19th, the City's parks consultants presented an assessment of findings to date to both the City Commission and to the public at two separate workshops. Findings, including a summary of information from the public survey, and ideas for moving forward are included in the presentation, available here.
  • On February 26th, David Barth and Carlos Perez, the City's park master plan consultants, facilitated a public workshop on the parks, recreation, and open space system in the City. Click here to review their presentation. They asked for general input on recommendations for improving the park system, and then invited participants to comment on specific parks with what people would recommend changing (or not) about that park, recreation area, or open space. The group also discussed different types of funding options for parks systems. Information from this workshop, along with the survey, will be used in creation of the parks and recreation master plan.

The solar heating project at the Atlantic Recreation Center Pool was completed in the fall of 2013.  Estimated savings to the City over fifteen years is expected to be $250,000.  At current energy rates, it will take 4 – 5 years to recoup the project cost of $31,900.  The solar panels will work in conjunction with the electric and gas heaters to warm the pool to a temperature in the mid 80's.
