The Parks & Recreation Department is committed to enriching the quality of life through exceptional programs, parks, and other facilities, while preserving the community’s natural environment for the enjoyment of our citizens.  The Parks & Recreation Department is responsible for:

  • City parks and playgrounds
  • Sports and fitness facilities
  • Recreation centers/swimming pools
  • Egans Creek Greenway
  • Amelia Island Lighthouse
  • Bosque Bello Cemetery
  • Landscaping of Historic Downtown
  • Special events permits
  • Bicycling brochure and map

The Department also offers or co-sponsors various adult and youth sports and activities; aquatics programs and scuba instruction; youth afterschool programs and summer camps; senior programs; instructed programs; and special events.

Financial assistance is available for City-sponsored programs to any City resident that meets the financial criteria.  Anyone interested should call the Atlantic Center Administrative Office at 904-310-3350 for more information.

If your 2015 total household income was $60,000 or less, you qualify to have your income taxes filed for free.  The Real Sense Free Income Tax Preparation service has qualified volunteers who will prepare your tax return.

"Invasive Exotic Plants: Problems in our Community" - free lecture and excursion

Join Parks & Recreation Department staff for a free program that will focus on the problems associated with invasive exotic plant species.  A short lecture will be followed by a walk through the Egans Creek Greenway to identify any invasive plants.  Please RSVP to

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course
March 11th - 20th, weekends (Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays)

This course is for persons interested in lifeguarding at a swimming pool.  Minimum age of 15 prior to course completion.

Parks Master Plan
October 20, 2015: The City Commission adopted the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. This plan is directed by the City's Comprehensive Plan in the Recreation and Open Space Element.

Parks & Recreation Department Improvements for 2015-2016
With the City's new fiscal year now in effect, several improvements are planned for the Parks & Recreation Department.  Several of these improvements will be of great service to our citizens, including:

  • Purchase of a Mobi-Chair and over 200 feet of Mobi-Mat beach access mat ( that will provide for wheelchair accessibility on the beach.
  • Purchase of state-of-the-art recreation management computer software that will greatly improve administrative functions for the benefit of both employees and customers, including facility rentals; child care registration; program and activity registrations; payment processing; and many others. 
  • Construction of a viewing platform in the Egans Creek Greenway.
  • Construction of a walkover at Beach Access #33.
  • Resurfacing of the kiddie pool at the Atlantic Recreation Center.
  • Addition of a multi-purpose court at Central Park (west of Tennis Courts #3 & #4) that will include a pickle ball area.
  • Completion of the restrooms' expansion at Central Park.
  • New fence installation around the Main Beach Multi-Purpose Court and Skate Park.
  • New flooring in the MLK, Jr. Recreation Center Auditorium.
  • Re-surfacing of the pool locker room floors at the MLK, Jr. Recreation Center.
  • Installation of irrigation in the Bosque Bello Cemetery.

Central Park Tennis Courts #3 & #4 renovated
The renovation project of Central Park Tennis Courts #3 & #4 was completed in July of 2015.  The courts were completely re-surfaced, and new fence was installed around them.  The project was partially funded by a $50,000 grant the City received through the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program (FRDAP).

City Resident Verification Cards
In order to receive City resident rates for pool (Atlantic and MLK, Jr. Pools) or fitness (Atlantic Fitness Room and Peck Gym) use, patrons must show City Resident Verification Cards. Applications for cards are available at the Atlantic Recreation Center and Peck Gym or download application here.  Proof of residency (driver’s license, City water bill) required.  First card is free; additional or lost cards are $1.00 each.  Please allow 1-5 business days for cards to be produced. Cards must be renewed September 30th of each year.

Fitness Center
This workout facility at the Atlantic Recreation Center possesses all of the equipment you need for a total body workout.  The price is right, whether paying daily or monthly fees, and there are NO initiation fees and NO contracts.  Personal training with a certified trainer is available.  If you're ready to get in shape, this facility will meet all of your fitness needs.
