The Parks & Recreation Department is committed to enriching the quality of life through exceptional programs, parks, and other facilities, while preserving the community’s natural environment for the enjoyment of our citizens.  The Parks & Recreation Department is responsible for:

  • City parks and playgrounds
  • Sports and fitness facilities
  • Recreation centers/swimming pools
  • Egans Creek Greenway
  • Amelia Island Lighthouse
  • Bosque Bello Cemetery
  • Landscaping of Historic Downtown
  • Special events permits
  • Bicycling brochure and map

                                      
The Department also offers or co-sponsors various adult and youth sports and activities; aquatics programs and scuba instruction; youth afterschool programs and summer camps; senior programs; instructed programs; and special events.

Financial assistance is available for City-sponsored programs to any City resident that meets the financial criteria.  Anyone interested should call the Atlantic Center Administrative Office at 904-310-3350 for more information.

Lifeguard Certification Course: May 27th - June 4th
Two weekends and 1 weeknight.  Minimum age of 15 prior to course completion.  Successful completion of a pre-test required in order to enroll.  All classes and pool time at the Atlantic Recreation Center.

City residents:  $120 payable to City of Fernandina Beach + $35 payable online to Red Cross = $155
Non-City residents:  $150 payable to City of Fernandina Beach + $35 payable online to Red Cross = $185
Register at the Atlantic Recreation Center.

Register Now for Summer Men's Basketball League
Registration:  Now through June 3rd at the Atlantic Recreation Center

Team registration fee:  $300 due by June 3rd

Season begins:  June 9th (games on Mondays and Thursdays at Peck Gym)

Last week to register for Summer Adult Softball Leagues!
We are offering two (2) adult softball leagues this summer.  Registration for either league ends this Friday, May 27th:
  • Co-ed 1-Pitch League - Monday nights beginning June 6th
  • Men's Recreational "Hit Our Stick" League - Thursday nights beginning June 9th

Registration for both leagues at Peck Gym:

May 23rd - 27th:  $325 team registration fee
Two-game refundable forfeit fees due June 3rd:  $48 for Co-ed, $72 for Men's

Register for the Summer Learning Camp through June 10th
Registration is being held now through June 10th for the Summer Learning Camp at the MLK, Jr. Recreation Center.  This program is for City residents only, ages 5 - 14.
  • One-time fee of $75 for each child.  Additional fees for field trips.
  • Lunch is provided
  • Camp days and hours:  Monday - Friday from 9:00am - 4:00pm (excluding Monday, July 4th) beginning May 31st
  • Only the first 100 applicants will be accepted

Camp Amelia Summer Camp - waiting lists for new registrants

As of Thursday, May 12th, all three age groups for the Camp Amelia Summer Camp at the Atlantic Recreation Center are full, and all new registrants will be placed on waiting lists.  A completed registration packet should be filled out and submitted for a child to be placed on a waiting list.  The $125 registration fee must be paid if a registrant is contacted to fill an opening in either of the age groups.

Kids are grouped according to grades

  • Going into Pre-K through going into Kindergarten - Full.  Waiting list has been started.

  • Going into 3rd Grade through Going into 6th Grade - Full.  Waiting list has been started.

We will be offering the following aquatics programs this summer.  Register at the Atlantic Recreation Center:
  • Group swimming lessons - American Red Cross Levels 1 - 4.  Ages 3 and up.
  • Jr. Lifeguard Program - ages 8-15
  • Jr. Beach Guard Program - ages 9-15
  • Aqua Adventure Camps - ages 10 and up

Swim Fernandina Free Swimming Lessons and Junior Lifeguard Program
The City of Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island Lifesaving Association, and the Ed Gaw Open Water Challenge are providing free spring and summer swimming lessons and spring Junior Lifeguard instruction to qualified Nassau County residents between the ages of 4 (entering kindergarten) and 16 years old.  Completion of a Swim Fernandina registration form and financial eligibility form with an attached public school free or reduced lunch verification letter or W-2 form are required for each individual.

Spring lessons and Junior Lifeguard instruction will be in May.  Summer swimming lessons will be offered in June and July.  All lessons  will be held at the MLK, Jr. Center Pool.


Parks Master Plan
October 20, 2015: The City Commission adopted the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. This plan is directed by the City's Comprehensive Plan in the Recreation and Open Space Element.


Parks & Recreation Department Improvements for 2015-2016
With the City's new fiscal year now in effect, several improvements are planned for the Parks & Recreation Department.  Several of these improvements will be of great service to our citizens, including:

  • Purchase of a Mobi-Chair and over 200 feet of Mobi-Mat beach access mat (www.mobi-mat.com) that will provide for wheelchair accessibility on the beach.
  • Purchase of state-of-the-art recreation management computer software that will greatly improve administrative functions for the benefit of both employees and customers, including facility rentals; child care registration; program and activity registrations; payment processing; and many others. 
  • Construction of a viewing platform in the Egans Creek Greenway.
  • Construction of a walkover at Beach Access #33.
  • Resurfacing of the kiddie pool at the Atlantic Recreation Center.
  • Addition of a multi-purpose court at Central Park (west of Tennis Courts #3 & #4) that will include a pickle ball area.
  • Completion of the restrooms' expansion at Central Park.
  • New fence installation around the Main Beach Multi-Purpose Court and Skate Park.
  • Re-surfacing of the pool locker room floors at the MLK, Jr. Recreation Center.
  • Installation of irrigation in the Bosque Bello Cemetery.
  • Installation of new air conditioning system in Peck Gym.


City Resident Verification Cards
In order to receive City resident rates for pool (Atlantic and MLK, Jr. Pools) or fitness (Atlantic Fitness Room and Peck Gym) use, patrons must show City Resident Verification Cards.  Applications for cards are available at the Atlantic Recreation Center and Peck Gym or download application here.  Proof of residency (driver’s license, City water bill) required.  First card is free; additional or lost cards are $1.00 each.  Please allow 1-5 business days for cards to be produced.  Cards must be renewed September 30th of each year.

Atlantic Fitness Room
Fitness Center
This workout facility at the Atlantic Recreation Center possesses all of the equipment you need for a total body workout.  The price is right, whether paying daily or monthly fees, and there are NO initiation fees and NO contracts.  Personal training with a certified trainer is available.  If you're ready to get in shape, this facility will meet all of your fitness needs.
