Sustainable Fernandina is an appointed group of City employees, representing each City department, that is committed to discovering and promoting ways to conserve resources, reduce energy costs, decrease waste, protect and strengthen the local economy and save money throughout the City of Fernandina Beach’s governmental operations.

From major planning projects, to how we perform daily tasks and manage facilities, Sustainable Fernandina and the City of Fernandina Beach are working to integrate sustainable practices into how we function and serve the community.

Sustainable Fernandina has identified the following goals which focus on ways the City can become a more sustainable local government in 2010-2011:
  • Establish City recycling center,
  • Create City-wide procedure for recycling within city facilities and departments,
  • Create policy and procedures for phasing out energy and resource inefficient lighting and plumbing within City facilities,
  • Evaluate recently-adopted City purchasing policy and research integrating green purchasing policies, and
  • Transition Boards and Committees from paper to electronic packets.
