The Tree City USA program was founded in 1976 and is one of the oldest programs of the Arbor Day Foundation.
Fernandina Beach initially received Tree City designation in 1986-1988, but the effort lapsed until 2006. For the past 17 years, the City has gradually increased its efforts to achieve the designation. In 2021, Fernandina Beach received its first ever growth award which coincides with the 20th year of participation in the Tree City USA program.
