Automatic transfer switches

Automatic Transfer switches can only be installed with a permit for a generator at the time the generator is installed. They cannot be prewired separately in advance for a future generator.

It is becoming a regular practice to install automatic transfer switches when wiring a new home without a generator permit and installation of a generator. This equipment is part of a backup power system and needs to be designed and installed with consideration of the capacity of the generator.

The wiring and installation of automatic transfer switches for standby power will only be allowed with a Generator permit and installation of a generator. Installation of this equipment cannot be done for future installation of generators.

For more information on requirements for generators, please see Bulletin B-02-2020 published on July 6th, 2020.
